Walk with Wildsmith: Michael Fox

By Chris Clark and Galih Richardson

For this Walk with Wildsmith stroll, we stepped out with actor, singer and all-round creative talent Michael Fox. Currently lighting up the stage in Teeth'n'Smiles, Michael's world is shaped by a love of timeless style, soulful music and the kind of effortless cool that comes from years of living the craft. We find out more about what inspires his work and his singular sense of style.

Your work spans quite a range, what first drew you into it and what's kept you there?

I have acted since I was 5, I loved it straight away. I just get so excited by the idea of a new script or a new project. No job is the same. And I love collaborating with new people.

Style can often be understated, how would you describe your approach to it day-to-day?

I try not to think too much about it. I love style that feels like you've just thrown things on. I love old classics, timeless staples in your wardrobe that never go out of fashion.

Looking back, are there moments in your career that have quietly shaped how you present yourself?

I think my music taste has shaped it. I love Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, Dylan and Crosby, Stills & Nash. I think the show I'm currently in, Teeth'n'Smiles, has let me live out the fantasy of being a 60s/70s songwriter every night. So I'm going to just live in that fantasy for a bit longer and dress like a 60s American Troubadour.

When you're moving through the city, what matters more to you: comfort, craftsmanship or character?

Character. I envy people that just dress exactly how they feel. If you think it's cool, then it's cool.

What makes a shoe something you return to again and again?

I just love aged classics. If it's good quality it just gets better and better over time. I'm hoping I'm ageing in a similar way….like boots of Spanish leather.

Finally, what is your favourite style of shoes and how do you like to dress them?

I jump about so much with what I like. But my go to right now is just a pair of battered lace up boots from the US, I've had them for 15 years, they just get better and better. Them, with anything denim. It's a pretty well trodden path I'd say.
